Fall Virtual Reading Series to Feature Black Lives Matter Founder Patrisse Cullors in November

In November, the American Booksellers Association’s ABC Children’s Group will kick off the second installment of its consumer-focused fall virtual reading series with Black Lives Matter founder Patrisse Khan-Cullors, author of When They Call You a Terrorist: A Black Lives Matter Memoir (St. Martin’s Press).
The two-part series will take place on Thursday, November 5, and Thursday, November 19, at 2:00 p.m. ET on Zoom, and will focus on the young readers edition, When They Call You A Terrorist: A Story of Black Lives Matter and the Power to Change the World (September 29, Wednesday Books).
The series will be moderated by Hannah Oliver Depp, owner of Loyalty Bookstores in Washington, DC, and Silver Spring, Maryland.
Topics to be covered during the book club include:
- A discussion of Black Lives Matter as an organization and movement
- A book talk on the young readers edition
While the reading series will focus on the young readers edition of Cullors’ memoir, the event is intended for all who want to listen an important dialogue about Black Lives Matter.
While ABA will coordinate these events for stores to promote, whether a bookstore benefits from them will depend on how much effort they put into marketing both the event and the store to their customer base. Social media marketing materials for the event, to be available next week (watch BTW), will have space available for bookstores to customize with their logos.
The October virtual reading series is featuring Punching the Air authors Ibi Zoboi and Yusef Salaam. The series kicks off on October 7. Booksellers can promote the event to their customers now.
