Black Business Month: Indie Publishers

The publishers on this list are Black-owned, support Black creators, create work that centers the Black experience, and have been operating independently for decades.
Founded in 1983 by Kassahun Checole, African World Press (and their sister press, The Red Sea Press) focuses on the “history, culture and politics of Africa and the African Diaspora.”
Black Classic Press was founded in 1978 by W. Paul Coates. This press is one of the oldest Black-owned indie publishers still in operation. It specializes in republishing titles that have gone out of print!
Wade and Cheryl Hudson founded Just Us Books in 1987 after being disappointed by the lack of representation in children’s books. Over the years, Just Us Books has expanded and launched several imprints, but continues to specialize in children’s titles.
Third World Press was founded in 1967 in Chicago, by Haki Madhubuti. This press is the oldest Black-owned indie publisher still in operation. In 2015, Third World Press became a nonprofit. Today, the nonprofit continues to publish books, but is also active in areas like education.
Universal Write Publications is a Black, woman-owned indie press that was founded in 2004 by Dr. Ayo Sekai. As an academic press, Universal Write Publications specializes in educational titles by Black authors.
