Here’s what’s happening in the world of indie bookstores this week:
Voice of America highlighted indie bookstores in an article on “U.S. Independent Bookstores Thriving and Growing,” which included a video titled “Finding New Books, Friends at Indie Bookstores.”
The Story House, a “bookstore on wheels,” has opened a brick-and-mortar storefront within Dawson’s Market in Rockville Town Center, Maryland.
[words] Bookstore held a soft launch event with Harlan Coben to celebrate its new location at the LifeTown Center in Livingston, New Jersey. See this week’s BTW for the full story.
Porter Square Books announced plans to open a second location, in a new literary center in Boston, Massachusetts.
A new Walls of Books location is slated to open in Cookeville, Tennessee.
VaLinda Miller, owner of The Booksmith, a recently closed bookstore in Seneca, South Carolina, plans to open Turning Page Bookshop later this year.
McNally Jackson will open a new location in The Shed at Hudson Yards in New York City.
Vallejo Bookshop in Vallejo, California, will reopen as Alibi Bookshop this June. The store is currently raising money to open.
The Midtown Scholar Bookstore in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, acquired the collection of the Philadelphia bookstore W.H. Allen as well as a new storefront to house the collection.
Alice Hutchinson, owner of Byrd’s Books in Bethel, Connecticut, received the 2019 Bill & Shannon Award for Community Service by the Bethel Democratic Town Committee.
Second Star to the Right Books in Denver, Colorado, won Westword’s Best of Denver 2019 in the Best Kids’ Bookstore category.
USA Today profiled University City, Missouri’s EyeSeeMe in an article titled “EyeSeeMe bookstore teaches children the value of African-American history.”
A roundup of indie bookstores in the Philadelphia suburbs included Main Point Books in Wayne, Narberth Bookshop in Narberth, Towne Book Center Wine Bar & Café in Collegeville, and more.
Papercuts J.P. was featured on a list of the five best bookstores in Boston.
The Griffin, the Canisius College student newspaper, featured Buffalo, New York’s Talking Leaves Books.
Women & Children First in Chicago, Illinois, announced that Karlee Nussbaum has joined its staff in the newly created position of outreach and sales liaison.
River Dog Book Co. in Beaver Dam, Wisconsin, continues to help collect Spanish-language books for refugees.
